What kind of tooth stains can a toothpaste remove?
Surface stains only. Dentists sort discoloration into 2 kinds, extrinsic and intrinsic, and a toothpaste works on the surface, where extrinsic stains sit.

Extrinsic stains commonly result from an accumulation of colored compounds on enamel.

Which Apagard is for coffee stains?
Serena. Its card is written for coffee and wine drinkers, and a 105 g tube costs $22.99. Smokin' is the same type in mild mint, with tobacco named first.
How hydroxyapatite is said to brighten
The 2021 review in Materials describes one explanation for the brighter look reported with hydroxyapatite pastes. It also notes the gap in long-term evidence.
Treat it as an explanation under study, not as a result you are owed.

When the stain is not on the surface
A tooth that has darkened from within will not answer to any toothpaste. The American Dental Association's sorting of discoloration exists for that reason.
If one tooth is darker than its neighbors, or the color changed after an injury, see a dentist before buying anything.
